I hopped that he was telling the truth
Day eleven of no water. I was told again today that it would be fixed soon. They told me it will be fixed by tomorrow but I have no expectations. It will get fixed when it get fixed, that is if it ever gets fixed.
I woke up today at about 8:30 when there was a knock on the door. It was the hotel employees with my breakfast. I wonder how much longer I would have slept if they wouldn't have come. I feel great today. After a very long rest I am fully rejuvenated. I finished my breakfast, took my shower and have been sitting on my bed finishing up some journal entries with the blinds open, AC on and my music playing. Right now I have the computer on shuffle and Mountain Music by Alabama is playing. A great and classic song! It reminds me of when nostalgic memories of vacations in my grandparents motor-home with my family when I was a young boy. It has been a relaxing morning, just what I needed.
It is now 12:15 and I am about to go meet up with Charles at his house. I will make sure to pass by the project site to see if there has been any progress. They were supposed to put up the concrete beams yesterday but it was raining a bit off and on so I am not sure if they were able to work. I will continue my journal when I return tonight.
Well they were able to work for at least part of the day. They have poured the cement for the concrete beams.
Like any teacher, I have found that I have my own "favorites". I am trying my hardest thought not to give them special treatment and to treat everyone the same. My new class, class 4 B has a good number of the children that I am fond of. Some of them include: Dominic, Naomi, Lauren, Jemima.
Charles and I went to a new internet café today. They have nicer computers and while the speed is improved from the other local café, it is still a bit sluggish. So for now this is the café that I will probably use the most. The fastest one that I have found is much too far away for me to visit on a regular basis. I have one more café to test out in the area still so we will see how that goes.
I am finding that I need more time to myself. From when I leave my hotel in the morning around 8am to when I get back around 7:30pm I am constantly with people. I think I am going to propose not going over to Charles house on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Just to space things out a bit so that I can have some time to myself. The tricky thing is that I need to be able to communicate my needs without offending Charles.
Charles' eldest son, "Paco" is kinda annoying. He is awkward and is continually trying to impress me not to mention a bit clingy at times. The problem is that the things that might impress a 13 year old doesn't necessarily impress a 23 year old.
During my walk to Charles' house I stopped at a little fruit stand to buy a watermelon. I have been with Charles before while he has purchased various fruits so I know what the going prices are. I told them I wanted to buy a watermelon and they responded by telling me that it costs ¢7,000. I told them that I knew the price should be ¢5000. They insisted that it was 7 and I pointed to the skin on my arm and I conveyed to them that having white skin did not mean I got a different price. They all laughed a little. The woman then told me she would give it to me for 6000. I told her that I would pay 5000. At that moment one of the boys told me that they cant sell it for 5000 because that is the same price they pay at the market. I looked at him with skepticism and said that I hopped that he was telling the truth because God is always listening. They all laughed again. Virtually everyone in Ghana is, by our standards, very religious. I had some small change in my pocket, ¢400, so I finally gave them 5,400 for the watermelon because I told them that I liked them, not to mention that the whole experience was rather entertaining.
Charles really likes to talk. This is a good characteristic of a tour guide but when you are not on a tour, it isn't always the best. He tends to over explain things and there are times when I want to just tell him "yeah, yeah, yeah, I know Charles, get to the point". He also repeats stories and explanations over and over again. It makes me laugh just writing about it. Tonight he asked me about what people in the US thought about the Iraq war. He seemed to be curious as to why more people were not upset about it. The fact that we are spending so much of our money over there and all of the people who have died is troubling to him and wants to know why we didn't solve things by talking and diplomacy.
Tonight I had two little lizards that wanted to join me for my shower tonight. They didn't move when I got closer until I was almost touching them.
